GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Wake Forest men's soccer team has been picked to finish third in the Atlantic Coast Conference in voting conducted by the league's nine head coaches, as announced on Wednesday by the conference office.
In addition to being picked third, the Demon Deacons received two of the nine first-place votes and totaled 60 points in the vote.
Maryland edged defending national champion North Carolina for first place in the poll with 72 points and three first-place votes. The Tar Heels, however, had the most first-place votes with four and finished with 71 total points.
Boston College (52), Virginia (49) and Duke (42) were four, five and six in the poll, while Clemson (30), NC State (18) and Virginia Tech (11) rounded out the voting.
The Demon Deacons finished the 2011 conference slate tied for third with a 4-3-1 overall record. Wake Forest defeated Clemson, Virginia Tech, Virginia and NC State last year, fell to North Carolina, Duke and Boston College and tied Maryland.
The Deacs return 18 players who saw action last season, including all 11 starters. In addition, Wake Forest has 11 newcomers as part of a recruiting class that was ranked No. 1 in the nation by College Soccer News.
Wake Forest will begin the 2012 campaign on Saturday when it hosts Wofford in the season opener. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Spry Stadium.
