WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's soccer team took its first step toward returning to the NCAA College Cup Saturday when it took to the field for the opening day of preseason camp for the 2012 season.
The Demon Deacons underwent fitness testing at Kentner Stadium and the Bob McCreary Strength Complex before heading to the pitch at Spry Stadium for their first touches of the year.
The squad started out working on ball skills and progressed to a counterattacking drill before finishing with a four-on-four tournament that was won by the team of Jenai Davidson, Courtney Owen, Marisa Park, Alisha Woodson and Aubrey Bledsoe
"The fitness tests went well. It was probably our best overall performance, with a lot of improvement from last semester to the fall," said head coach Tony da Luz. "The new kids were solid, so we're really pleased with their conditioning."
Wake Forest returns 10 starters from the team that advanced to last year's College Cup for the first time in program history. The Deacons have added four newcomers in freshmen Jenai Davidson, Katie Dry, Sara Small and Taylor Waters.
The Deacons will play their lone exhibition match next Saturday, Aug. 11, on the road at College of Charleston, before opening the regular season against Richmond on Aug. 17 as part of the Virginia Tech tournament at Blacksburg, Va.
