Wake Forest will look for its second-consecutive ACC victory on Saturday afternoon when the Demon Deacons travel to Tallahassee to take on the No. 5-ranked Florida State Seminoles. Kickoff at Doak Campbell Stadium is slated for noon. The game will be televised on ESPN.
The Demon Deacons (2-0, 1-0 ACC) are coming off a 28-27 win over in-state rival North Carolina last weekend at BB&T Field.
Trailing the Tar Heels 27-21 late in the fourth quarter, the Deacons pulled off a 97-yard scoring drive led by quarterback Tanner Price. Price's one-yard touchdown plunge tied the game with 2:09 remaining, and kicker Jimmy Newman's PAT was good to seal the win.
Last Saturday, the Seminoles (2-0) recorded their fourth shutout since 2010 in a 55-0 game-shortened victory over Savannah State.
Redshirt freshman Kelvin Benjamin's first career touchdown reception came on a nine-yard grab in the first quarter to give FSU a 28-0 lead. Benjamin then recorded his second TD grab in the third quarter for his first-ever multi-TD game of his FSU career.
In their first road contest of the season, the Deacs will face one of the top-ranked teams in the country. Wake Forest has won four of the last six games against Florida State and looks to shut down a prolific Seminoles offense.
"The coaches have a great game plan put together," said junior linebacker Mike Olson. "They work day-in and day-out to prepare us. Everyone coming off this win, it just makes everyone that more hungry to work for the team and the guy next to them. We just have to have a great week of practice."
After last Saturday's victory over the Tar Heels, three Wake Forest players earned ACC player of the Week honors which marked the first time that three Deacons earned weekly ACC honors in the same week since Nov. 3, 2008.
Defensive end Hasan Hazime was named the Defensive Lineman of the Week in his first career start for Wake Forest. The graduate student totaled five tackles including three solos and two assists. When Hazime sacked UNC quarterback Bryn Renner to force a fumble in the second quarter, he recovered it to set up a Deacon touchdown.
The Wake Forest offense was also acknowledged, as quarterback Tanner Price was named the Offensive Back of the Week and flanker Michael Campanaro was named the Receiver of the Week.
Campanaro finished with career-highs of 13 catches and 164 receiving yards. The 13 receptions were the most-ever for a Deacon against North Carolina.
Price completed 27 of 38 passes for a career-high 327 yards. Price also rushed for a career-best two touchdowns, including the game-winning one-yard plunge with 2:09 remaining in the fourth quarter.
"I've been one of the guys saying before the season started that he (Price) was about to have a breakout year," said Campanaro. "He had a great game, set a career-high, so he's definitely taking those next steps and showing the country that he's an elite quarterback."
The Seminoles and Deacons will kick off at noon on Saturday on ESPN.
