My Football Journey: Garrick Williams

Q: When did you start playing football?
A: I first started playing football around second or third grade. We didn't have Pop Warner where I'm from, but we had a youth league in Columbia (Mo.).
Q: When did you first realize you could play at the major college level?
A: Probably around my sophomore or junior year after talking with my head coach in high school and my parents. I started getting some interest during my junior year, and I thought this was definitely a possibility for me. Before that, I really wasn't sure if I was good enough to play at the next level. But, fortunately, I was blessed enough to get a scholarship to Wake Forest and come play here.
Q: Describe the recruiting process and how you ended up at Wake Forest.
A: Going into my junior year I started getting some interest from some local colleges around where I'm at. Then the summer before my senior year I got a call from Wake Forest, and they wanted me to come out here. I came out here for a couple of visits, and they offered me a scholarship. I committed soon after that.
Q: Being an offensive lineman, were you always one of the bigger players on your teams growing up?
A: Yes, for the most part. I was always an offensive lineman from the very beginning. I was always one of the bigger guys on the team.
Q: What area of your game have you had to work the hardest at to improve?
A: Snapping. I played tackle and guard all through high school and came here as a tackle. I had to move to center [during spring practice in 2011] and that was a completely different position for me, so I had to learn how to snap.
Q: Is there an area of your game that just comes natural to you?
A: Pass blocking. I've always been a good pass blocker. It's part of the reason why I got recruited here.
Q: What is the best memory of your high school career?
A: My junior year we went 9-1. It was a pretty good season.
Q: Has there been a coach or mentor who has impacted you during your football career?
A: My head high school coach [A.J. Ofodile]. He helped me a lot with my recruiting.
Q: What do you plan to do after your football career is over?
A: I don't know. That's what I'm kind of discovering right now. I'm thinking about a few things: grad school, nursing school and some other options. I'm trying to figure that out this last season.
