For the first time since 2007, Wake Forest will host Tobacco Road rival North Carolina on Saturday, Sept. 8 in both teams' ACC opener. Like Liberty the week before, Carolina has an entirely new coaching staff this season, which limits the film options for the Demon Deacons and their preparations.
"It was hard for us against Liberty this past weekend,. We weren't real sure what we were going to see from Turner (Gill) and his coaching staff," said Wake Forest head coach Jim Grobe. "We've got some of the same issues (with North Carolina). (They give you) a different look defensively than we're used to, and offensively they give you the up-tempo stuff which is real difficult since it forces your defenders to try and line up a play in a hurry. They've got one of the more talented teams in the country."
Despite a 49-24 setback in Chapel Hill last season, Wake Forest has had the advantage in recent years. The Deacons have won two of the past three meetings and six of 10 meetings since 1999. Wake Forest beat UNC 37-10 in the Tar Heels' last trip to Winston-Salem.
Tommy Bohanon recorded his first career rushing touchdown in last year's game in Chapel Hill but the senior fullback wants more this year.
"I think we'll definitely be excited and want to get revenge for that game," said Bohanon. "We got blown out at their place, so we're going to come out fired up and want to play hard."
With Carolina known for its passing offense, including the no-huddle spread attack of head coach Larry Fedora, the Deacons will try to shut down the Tar Heels' up-tempo style of play.
"I love it, knowing that there is a better chance that they are going to pass the ball. I just love it when the ball is in the air and either you're going to make the play or you're not," said junior safety A.J. Marshall, who returned his first career interception for a touchdown last week against Liberty.
"We've been looking forward to getting into ACC play," added junior flanker Michael Campanaro. "UNC is a big game, especially the way went and played up there last year. Guys are ready and ramped up to get after them."
The rivalry game is set to kick off at 3 p.m. on Saturday at BB&T Field. This also marks Wake Forest's annual Hall of Fame Weekend. The three newest members of the Wake Forest Sports Hall of Fame, Janet Bergman Fleishman, Roper Halverson and Dave Wiedeman, will be recognized at halftime.
