Birdsey's Season-Low Round Leads Deacs BOT

JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. - Wake Forest senior Thomas Birdsey carded a Demon Deacon-low 5-under 67 on Friday to lead the Demon Deacons in the opening round of the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at The Ridges.
Birdsey made three birdies and his lone bogey of the day at No. 8 to make the turn at 2-under 34. He then made eagle at the par-5 10th and another birdie at No. 13 to post a 5-under 67. That is his lowest round as a Demon Deacon and his second-lowest collegiate round as he shot a 7-under 65 as a freshman at Kansas State.
Birdsey starts the second round just one shot off the lead of Rhys Pugh of East Tennessee State who opened with a 66.
Freshman Danny Guise continued his solid start to his career as he posted an even-par round of 72 on Friday. Guise had four bogeys on the opening nine and made the turn at 2-over 38. But he played a clean second nine with seven pars and two birdies. He was one of XX players at even-par or better on the day and will start Saturday's round in a tie for 24th.
Senior Cyrus Stewart, playing in his first full-field event in over a year, countered a pair of double-bogeys with three birdies to open with a 2-over 74. Stewart is in a tie for 41st.
Sophomore Davis Womble and freshman Clancy Waugh each opened with rounds of 77. Waugh had an up-and-down opening nine, going out in 2-over with three birdies. He settled down a bit on the back nine, making eight pars but also had a triple-bogey at No. 17. The pair is in a tie for 60th starting the second round.
Host East Carolina stormed out of the gate with an 11-under 277 and leads the team race by 7 shots over Virginia Tech.
