WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest women's soccer senior and three-time All-American Katie Stengel has been diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis, commonly known as blood clots, in her left leg that will keep her off the playing field indefinitely.
Stengel is undergoing a treatment regimen that includes blood-thinning medication, and while she is on the medication she will be unable to play soccer.
"While Katie is irreplaceable on the field, our primary concern is her health and well-being," said head coach Tony da Luz. "We will support Katie through her treatment and are hopeful that she will be able to come back and finish out her senior season."
The 2011 ACC Offensive Player of the Year, Stengel is Wake Forest's all-time leading scorer, totaling 50 goals and 124 points in her career. She leads the team with six goals and eight assists this season, with her eight assists tied for the most among ACC players.
