By Gary Petit, Wake Forest Athletic Communications (@WakeMGolf)ALPHARETTA, Ga. - The Wake Forest men's golf team opened the prestigious US Collegiate Championship on Friday with a round of 2-under 286 and is in fifth place.
This was the third-straight under-par round for the Deacons. Georgia Tech holds the opening round lead after a 9-under 279.
Sophomore Davis Womble rebounded from a tough week last weekend with an opening round 2-under 70. He made a total of 14 pars on the day and birdied two of his final three holes. Womble starts the second round in a tie for 10th.
Senior Thomas Birdsey is coming off the best tournament of his career and he continued that solid play with a 1-under 71. This was his fourth-straight under-par round and he is tied for 20th.
Freshman Danny Guise was a shot behind Birdsey at even-par 72. Like Birdsey, this was Guise' fourth-straight round at par or better. Fellow freshman Clancy Waugh made the turn in 2-over par and slipped to 3-over par after a double-bogey at No. 14. But he eagled the par-5 18th to finish his round with a 1-over 73.
Cyrus Stewart rounded out the Deacon-five on Friday with a 5-over 77.
Virginia's Ben Rusch and Georgia Tech's Ollie Schniederjans each shot rounds of 6-under 66. They lead a pack of seven players who shot 3-under 69s on Friday.
Wake Forest will start the second round at 9:00 a.m. Saturday morning with Duke and Texas A&M. Live video of the event will be shown at new.livestream.com/2013uscc/webcast each of the final two rounds beginning at 3 p.m.
