Luca Gimenez Named ACC Player of the Week

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Senior forward Luca Gimenez has been named Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Soccer Player of the Week after putting together a five-point night in Wake Forest's 4-3 win at fourth-ranked Maryland on Saturday night.
Gimenez (Sao Paulo, Brazil) was able to score two goals and dish out an assist to earn the five points.
This marks the second time of his career that Gimenez has earned the award and the second time this season that a Demon Deacon has been named ACC Player of the Week. Jalen Robinson earned the honor on October 1 after tying the game against then-No. 1 North Carolina with less than a minute to go.
Gimenez's first ACC Player of the Week nod came on October 1, 2012 after he scored his first-career hat trick at Virginia Tech.
The Deacs jumped off to 1-0 lead early on thanks to an own goal by Maryland. Gimenez, who came off the bench in the 21st minute, made the score 2-0 in the 29th minute. He dribbled the length of midfield down the right side before beating the Maryland keeper to the far post.
The Terrapins scored in the 36th minute on a penalty kick, but Gimenez stopped any momentum they may have gained by pushing the lead back two goals at 3-1 with a header off a pass from Sean Okoli in the 39th minute.
Gimenez then capped off his five-point night with an assist to Okoli in the 41st minute that gave the Demon Deacons a 4-1 lead at halftime.
Maryland scored twice within the first 15 minutes of the second half, but Wake Forest was able to hold on for the 4-3 win and stay atop the ACC table at 5-0-3 in conference action.
Wake Forest will be in action again tonight when it hosts local foe Davidson at 7 p.m. at Spry Stadium.
