WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest's Dearica Hamby posted a double-double of 20 points and 17 rebounds, but Wingate hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with just over a minute to play to hand the Demon Deacons a 69-66 loss in an exhibition on Saturday afternoon at the LJVM Coliseum.
The Deacons trailed by eight at halftime and by as many as 11 in the second half but used a 15-3 run to take a 56-55 lead with 6:32 to play in the game. After neither team could gain much separation in the waning minutes, Wake Forest went ahead 64-63 on a jumper from Hamby.
Wingate followed with a 3-pointer from Kayla Harris to retake the lead 66-64 at the 1:03 mark. The Deacons missed on their next possession, and the Bulldogs hit two free throws to push their margin to four with 14 seconds to play.
After Chelsea Douglas hit a runner in the lane to cut the lead to two, Wingate hit 1-of-2 free throws to give the Deacons one last chance. However, Douglas' would-be game-tying 3-pointer at the buzzer was off, giving the visiting Bulldogs the win.
Douglas led all scorers with 25 points, going 5-for-12 from 3-point range. She also had six rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Hamby added five steals, two blocks and an assist to her double-double. Freshman point guard Mykia Jones turned in six points, six rebounds, two assists and no turnovers in 30 minutes on the court.
Wingate's Harris and Janitsha Williams both posted double-doubles to lead the Bulldogs. Harris had 20 points and 10 boards, while Williams finished with 20 points and 13 rebounds.
The Deacons hosted a free youth basketball clinic on the Joel Coliseum court following the game, and nearly 100 boys and girls were in attendance.
Wake Forest opens the regular season next Saturday, Nov. 9, at Marquette. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. in Milwaukee.
