WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Michael Gamble, Collin Martin and Jalen Robinson have each been named to the 2012 All-ACC Academic Team as announced by Commissioner John Swofford on Friday morning.
The trio of freshmen earned the accolades for the first time in their careers after making an immediate impact both in the classroom and on the field for the Deacs.
To be eligible for consideration, each student-athlete must have earned a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.0 cumulative average over the course of their academic career.
Gamble and Martin appeared in all 20 contests for the Demon Deacons during the fall while Robinson made 18 appearances en route to helping the squad post an 11-4-5 record with a 4-1-3 mark in ACC matches.
Gamble, hailing from Columbia, Md., started 19 games for Wake Forest and finished second on the team with 20 points (eight goals, four assists). He made several important plays over the course of the season, including notching a goal in each of Wake's postseason contests. The freshman was also named to the All-ACC Freshman Team as well as national All-Freshman teams published by TopDrawerSoccer.com and College Soccer News.
Martin, a native of Chevy Chase, Md., made 15 starts in the midfield for the Demon Deacons and played a key role in setting up many of the team's attacks this season. He led the squad with six assists and added one goal as well to finish with eight points. Like Gamble, Martin was also honored with a spot on the All-ACC Freshman Team and TopDrawerSoccer.com's Second Team All-Freshman list.
Robinson began his collegiate career with a bang by scoring the game-winning goal in Wake Forest's season opener against Wofford. The Catonsville, Md., native went on to make 17 starts during the 2012 season and finished with two goals, one assist and five points. A key member of the back line for the Deacs, Robinson was named to the All-ACC Freshman Team, TopDrawerSoccer.com's All-Freshman First Team and College Soccer News's Second Team.
Each of the conference's nine schools were represented on this year's team and North Carolina's Scott Goodwin was honored as the 2012 Scholar-Athlete of the Year for men's soccer.
Wake Forest will kick off its spring schedule on Saturday, Mar. 9, at 1:00 p.m. as the Deacs travel to Raleigh to face the Carolina Railhawks, a professional team that competes in the North American Soccer League.
