WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest benefitted from two goals by Sean Okoli, and Alec Ferrell and Andrew Harris earned the team shutout, as the Demon Deacons defeated VCU 2-0 on Saturday night at Spry Stadium.
After tying a pair of professional teams - the Carolina RailHawks and the Charlotte Eagles - the Demon Deacons were able to earn their first win of the spring and improve to 1-0-2.
The Demon Deacons and the Rams played to a scoreless tie in the first half, and the game remained 0-0 through the first 30 minutes of the second half. It was in the 76th minute when Okoli put the Deacs on the board. He had the ball at the top of the box on the right side, took a few touches to his left and sent the left-footed shot past the keeper.
Okoli then put the game out of reach with his second goal in the 80th minute. He forced the VCU goalkeeper into a turnover, collected the ball about 25 yards out and fired a shot on frame. The shot hit off the keeper's hand and trickled across the line.
Ferrell started and played the entire first half, making one save in the process. Harris completed the shutout for the Demon Deacons by making two second-half saves.
After the match, the reserve units for both sides played one 45-minute half, with VCU scoring the only goal on a restart in the 21st minute.
Wake Forest will play a doubleheader next Saturday. The Demon Deacons will begin at home against Mars Hill at 12 p.m. at Spry Stadium. The Deacs will then head to Greensboro to play ACC-rival Virginia at 7 p.m. at Bryan Park.
