WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Will Clayton has been named an assistant coach at UMass Lowell after a three-year stint on the Wake Forest men's soccer coaching staff.
"While I am sad to leave my alma mater and a place I love so much, joining UMass Lowell was an opportunity I had to take. The transition to Division I will provide a tremendous opportunity to grow and challenge myself in a new environment," said Clayton. "There is a lot of momentum surrounding the school and the community, and I can't wait to help the program continue their growth and compete for championships."
Clayton, who also spent four years as a player with the Demon Deacons and was a member of the 2007 national championship team, will be joining the River Hawks staff as the team prepares for its first season at the NCAA Division I level in the America East Conference.
"This is both a happy and a sad time for the Wake Forest soccer program," said Wake Forest head coach Jay Vidovich. "We are extremely happy that Will has an opportunity to develop as a coach and help build a Division I program. We are sad to lose Will, though, because behind-the-scenes, he has been absolutely tremendous. Will has been an integral part of our program coming back to prominence. We wish him nothing but the best of luck."
As a coach at Wake Forest, Clayton was primarily responsible for the team's multimedia efforts as well as team travel and meals.
"I can't thank Coach Vidovich and Wake Forest soccer enough for my development as a coach and a person," said Clayton. "The last eight years as a player and a coach have been the most influential years of my life, and I feel very fortunate to have learned from the best. These players have worked incredibly hard, and I can't wait to watch them reap the benefits in a big way this fall."
