WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest men's soccer team will host the 13th-annual Walt Chyzowych Memorial Fund Soccer Clinic on Friday, August 23 from 5-6:30 p.m. at the practice fields adjacent to Spry Stadium.
The clinic is free and is designed for all players between the ages of 5-15 and will include a free t-shirt to the first 250 participants.
The Demon Deacon soccer players will help run the clinic and will be available for autographs at the conclusion of the session. The Deacs will guide the youth through various technical skills, some small-sided games and barefoot soccer.
All players planning to participate in the clinic should bring a ball, shin guards and a water bottle.
In addition, all players who attend will be admitted into the Wake Forest women's soccer team's season opener at 6:30 p.m. against Kentucky at Spry Stadium.
For additional information, contact assistant coach Dane Brenner at (336) 758-3744.
The first Walt Chyzowych Memorial Fund (WCMF) soccer clinic was organized and conducted by College of Charleston men's soccer coach Ralph Lundy in 1995. Since then clinics have been conducted nationwide including UAB, Indiana and at the IMG Academies in Bradenton, Fla.
About Walt Chyzowych
When Chyzowych stepped in as Wake's men's soccer head coach in 1986 the Deacs had only posted one ACC win through two seasons. Under his leadership, the squad saw rapid improvement and within three seasons took their first ACC title in 1989.
But Chyzowych's influence extended far beyond the Winston-Salem city limits. Before landing at Wake Forest he served as the United States Soccer Federation's (USSF) Director of Coaching. In addition to leading U.S. National teams, Chyzowych designed and conducted licensed courses across the country to train aspiring coaches.
Chyzowych is known as "a pioneer for American collegiate coaches" for his role founding, organizing and promoting the nation's first soccer education program.
Chyzowych passed away on Sept. 2, 1994, just one day before the start of the '94 season.
