BUIES CREEK, N.C. - After a scoreless first half, Wake Forest struck twice in the second half en route to a 2-1 victory over Campbell in the team's first of two exhibition matches of the preseason on Saturday night at the Eakes Athletic Complex.
The Demon Deacons and the Camels entered halftime tied 0-0. Wake Forest's Andrew Harris started and played the first 45 minutes, making two saves in the half to keep Campbell off the board. The Deacs' only shot of the first half came off the foot of Kovi Konowiecki.
Wake Forest struck almost immediately in the second half when Teddy Mullin put the Demon Deacons up 1-0 at 49:47. Luca Gimenez assisted on the goal.
The Camels knotted the game at 1-1 at the 66:07 mark when Jhuvon Francis connected with Isaiah Page, who found the back of the net.
After assisting on the first Deacon goal of the night, Gimenez answered Page's goal with the game-winning goal just 31 seconds later at 66:38. Rafael Fagundo dished out the assist on the Gimenez goal.
Campbell outshot Wake Forest 4-1 in the first half, but the Demon Deacons ended up outshooting the Camels 12-7 for the game. Mullin led the Deacs with five shots, and Gimenez added three. All eight of their shots were on goal.
Wake Forest also had four corner kicks, while Campbell had just three.
The Demon Deacons will have one more exhibition game next Saturday at Spry Stadium against Furman at 7 p.m. The regular season opener is at home on August 30 at 8 p.m. against Coastal Carolina.
