
Birdsey & Guise Pace Deacs At Collegiate Challenge Cup

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Wake Forest senior Thomas Birdsey and freshman Danny Guise are both 3-over par through 36 holes to lead the Demon Deacons at the Dicks Sporting Goods Collegiate Challenge Cup on Friday.
As a team, the Demon Deacons carded rounds of 301 and 287 and are in ninth place in the 10-team field. Texas A&M fired a 13-under 271 in the afternoon round and holds a one-shot lead over SEC foe Georgia.
Birdsey made five birdies in the morning round of 1-over 72 and three more birdies in the afternoon round of 73. After a 77 to open the season, Birdsey hasn't carded a round higher than 73.
Guise had a tough morning round, making just one birdie en route to a 5-over 76. But he rebounded quickly in the afternoon, making the turn in even par and birdying four holes on his way home for a 2-under 69. That is his lowest round of the season and he and Birdsey will start the final round in a tie for 21st.
Senior John Varol and freshman Woody Woodward are both 7-over through two rounds while fellow freshman Clancy Waugh is two strokes back at 9-over. Like Guise, Varol struggled in the morning, posting a 6-over 77 but came back with six birdies in the afternoon in a round of 1-over 72. Woodward made a total of six birdies on Friday and carded rounds of 76-73. Waugh finished with round of 76-74 while make nine birdies.
Texas A&M's Ben Crancer birdied his final four holes of the afternoon round en route to carding an 8-under 63 and he holds the individual lead at 11-under par. He leads a pair of players by five shots.
The Deacs are paired with Boston College in the final round which starts at 9:00 a.m. ET. Upon completion of the round, match play pairings will be set. Sunday will consist of team matches between the two conferences. Follow the final round and match play on Golfstat.com.
