UMBC Downs Wake Forest in Penalty Kicks

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - After 110 minutes of scoreless action, UMBC advanced 3-2 in penalty kicks over Wake Forest on Thursday in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Wake Forest finishes the season with a 10-7-2 record while UMBC (12-5-4) moves on to face Maryland on Sunday in the second round.

In a tight contest, each team had several chances throughout regulation and in two overtime periods though neither side could score.

UMBC took a 3-1 lead in the penalty shootout until Jacori Hayes converted and goalkeeper Alec Ferrell stopped the fifth attempt for the Retrievers. Jared Odenbeck's attempt in the fifth round of the shootout hit the crossbar, leading to UMBC advancing.

Ian Harkes led Wake Forest with four shots in the game. Ferrell had three saves in the contest. UMBC held an 11-8 advantage in shots while Wake Forest had a 4-2 lead in corner kicks.

In a tight first half, the two teams combined for five shots. UMBC had the first two shots while Harkes had a header in the 40th minute that went just over the crossbar. Tied 0-0 at halftime, Wake Forest had two shots within the first nine minute of action but each were off target. Harkes nearly broke through in the 77th minute but his shot was saved by goalkeeper Billy Heavner.

Heading into overtime scoreless, UMBC had an opportunity on a shot by Kay Banjo but it was smothered by Ferrell. Each team traded a shot in the second overtime but still scoreless, the game went into the penalty shootout with UMBC advancing.

- Wake Forest played in four overtime games this season, ending with a 2-0-2 record.
- The last two games of the season both went to penalty kicks for Wake Forest.
- Sam Fink finishes his career at Wake Forest with 40 wins and was a part of four teams that played in the NCAA Tournament.
- Senior Shane Powell played 14 minutes in the game and had one shot.
- The Deacons are 1-3 in penalty shootouts all-time in the NCAA Tournament.
- Thursday was the first time since 2011 that Wake Forest has gone to penalty kicks in the NCAA Tournament.
