WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest linebacker Marquel Lee has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Linebacker of the Week for his performance in Saturday's 6-3 double overtime win over Virginia Tech at BB&T Field.
Lee, a 6-3, 235-pound sophomore inside linebacker from Pomfret, Md.(Westlake HS), tied his career-high and led Wake Forest with 12 tackles including seven solo stops and a forced fumble. Lee added three tackles for a loss of 25 yards and 2.5 sacks for a loss of 24 yards.
Lee combined with rover Steve Donatell for a two-yard tackle for loss in the second quarter. Later in the period, he tackled Hokie quarterback Brenden Motley and forced a fumble that was recovered by Ryan Janvion.
Early in the fourth quarter, Lee sacked Hokie QB Michael Brewer for an 11-yard loss that forced Virginia Tech to punt on fourth down. Lee then recorded a solo sack of Brewer with 2:43 to play in the game that thwarted Tech's attempt for a game-winning drive.
His final sack came in overtime with Virginia Tech facing a 3rd and 9 at the 24 yard line. Lee and Desmond Floyd sacked Brewer for an 11-yard loss, forcing the Hokies to attempt a 53-yard field goal.
Wake Forest's defense held the Hokies to 111 yards rushing (29 below their average), 143 yards passing (89 yards below average) and 254 yards of total offense (118 below average). Until the overtime period placed the ball at the 25, Virginia Tech did not run a play that originated closer than the Wake Forest 23 yard line.
