Great Leaders, Great Seasons
All three of Wake Forest's signees -- Campbell, Nicole Floyd and Taylor Gordon -- led their teams to their respective state championship games this season.
Campbell scored 33 points and hit two clutch free throws with seven seconds remaining to give Northwood a three-point lead. But Wilson hit a three-pointer for Heatherwood at the end of regulation to send the game into overtime. Heatherwood then pulled-out a 66-58 victory in overtime.
Floyd led Stonewall Jackson to the Virginia 6A state final against Cosby. Floyd finished with a double-double, scoring a team-high 19 points and grabbing a team-high 12 rebounds.
Playing against undefeated Cosby's formidable front line that featured four players at 6-1 or taller, Floyd stood her ground and had Stonewall Jackson on the brink of an upset. Her three-pointer with 20 seconds remaining, brought the Raiders within three at 49-46. But Cosby was able to make its free throws down the stretch and would hold on for a 53-46 victory.
Floyd paced Stonewall to a 22-7 overall record this season. In addition to being named the Region Player of the Year, Floyd also was named the 6A North Regional Championship MVP after leading Stonewall to the tournament title.
Gordon helped McEachern (Ga.) become Cobb County's first Georgia High School Association's multi-state champion in girls basketball since the tournament's inception in 1945. She scored nine points, made 5-of-6 clutch free throws and was the Indians' emotional leader en route to an 82-61 victory over Archer in the class AAAAAA title game. It was McEachern's second title in three years.
Gordon earned second team All-Metro Atlanta honors this season by averaging over 12 points per game and helping McEachern to a 28-2 record. This was Gordon's first season with McEachern. She sat out last season after transferring from North Cobb High School.
