CHICAGO - Former Demon Deacon Michael Parkhurst has been selected for a spot on the U.S. Men's National Team in advance of the USA-Mexico showdown on April 2 at the University of Phoenix Stadium.
Parkhurst, a recent fixture along the back line for the United States, has made 24 international caps in his career. The defender saw playing time during the run to the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup championship last summer and is fighting for a spot on the 2014 World Cup squad.
The MLS veteran, who was acquired by the Columbus Crew prior to the 2014 season, competed at Wake Forest from 2002-04. Parkhurst started all 62 games during his tenure as a Demon Deacon and registered one goal and a pair of assists.
The friendly against Mexico will be the final match for the United States prior to beginning preparations for the World Cup. The Americans are scheduled to begin group play in Brazil on June 16 against recent nemesis Ghana, who has eliminated the U.S. from the last two World Cups.
