GREENSBORO, N.C. - Wake Forest senior Chelsea Douglas scored 20 points and had the Demon Deacons on the brink of an upset but North Carolina made enough plays down the stretch to hold on for a 69-65 victory Thursday evening at the ACC Tournament.
In what turned out to be her final game as a Demon Deacon, Douglas scored 20 points and 7-of-16 from the floor and 2-of-7 from beyond the arc. She also grabbed three rebounds and dished-out a pair of assists.
Junior Dearica Hamby finished with a game-high 29 points, 19 of which game in the opening period. She also grabbed a game-high eight rebounds and had three steals.
Wake Forest had a tremendous first half, shooting over 58 percent and building a 39-27 lead. But North Carolina quickly erased the deficit with a 14-0 run at the start of the second half which setup an entertaining finish.
Diamond DeShields led the Heels with 17 points and eight rebounds. She hit a clutch three-pointer with 1:44 to play and then sank 3-of-4 free throws in the final minute to seal the victory.
Turning Point
North Carolina came out of the locker room and scored the first 14 points of the second half to erase a 12-point deficit and take a 41-39 lead. That completely squashed the momentum Wake Forest had built in the first half.
By The Numbers
- Wake Forest shot over 58 percent in the opening half and held UNC to just 32 percent shooting. But in the second half, Wake was just 6-of-23 from the floor for 26 percent.
- Hamby dominated the opening half with 19 points, four rebounds and three steals. She had just 10 points, four rebounds and no steals in the second half.
- Hamby went 9-of-12 from the free throw line in the game, giving her 142 made free throws this season which breaks Nicole Levesque previous school-record of 140 made free throws in 1991-92.
- Wake Forest had 26 turnovers on the night and just 23 made field goals while North Carolina had 22 turnovers and 22 made field goals.
Of Note
- The game was delayed for 23 minutes with 16:19 to play in the game as the power went out in the building.
- This was the sixth-straight season that Wake Forest won a game at the ACC Tournament, the most of any team in the conference.
- Chelsea Douglas finished her career fourth all-time in points scored in school-history with 1,656 points. She is also second in three-pointers made with 257.
