WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Head coach Dave Clawson and the Wake Forest football team are set to partner with the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity and other student groups for the 17th annual "Pump Up for Piccolo" event on Wednesday to raise money for the Brian Piccolo Cancer Fund Drive.
Sixteen teams comprised of two football players and two students will compete against each other in a series of strength and agility events, with prizes being awarded to the winning teams.
The Brian Piccolo Cancer Fund Drive was started by students in 1980 in memory of former Wake Forest football star Brian Piccolo who lost his battle to cancer at age 26. More than $1.7 million has been raised over the last 33 years for the cancer drive. Money raised from Wednesday's competition will be donated to the Comprehensive Cancer Center of Wake Forest University.
The student-athletes, fraternity brothers and student organizations will raise money through individual and business sponsorships of the competition. They have established a goal of $2,000 that they hope to raise during the event.
Due to the forecast of rain on Wednesday, the event will be moved indoors in the Manchester Athletic Center weight room.
