MELBOURNE, Fla. - Katie Stengel, Wake Forest's all-time leading scorer in both goals and points, has been inducted as a 2014 member of the Space Coast Sports Hall of Fame as recently announced by the organization.
Stengel, a four-time All-ACC and three-time All-American selection, wrapped up her Demon Deacon career with 50 goals and 125 points in just 75 appearances. She was named the 2010 ACC Freshman of the Year after a 16-goal, 37-point campaign that culminated in Wake Forest's first ACC Championship in women's soccer.
Just one season later, however, she would top those marks en route to being the only Demon Deacon to ever be named the ACC's Offensive Player of the Year. During her sophomore season in 2011, Stengel set school records for goals (19) and points (46) after having set the previous records herself as a freshman, while also becoming the first player since Mia Hamm to lead the ACC in goals scored in two consecutive seasons. Stengel led Wake Forest to its first-ever College Cup appearance at the end of the 2011 season.
More recently, Stengel became the first Demon Deacon to receive a call-up to the senior women's national team when she competed in a pair of friendlies against China in April. She previously found high levels of success with the junior national teams, capturing the U-20 World Cup in 2012 and the Six Nations Tournament with the U-23 squad in February.
Stengel will be honored by the Space Coast Sports Hall of Fame at its banquet and induction ceremony on May 9.
