CHICAGO - Former Wake Forest men's soccer player Michael Parkhurst has been named to the United States' preliminary roster 30-man for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, head coach Jurgen Klinsmann announced today.
Parkhurst, a defender who currently plays for the Columbus Crew in MLS, will start training camp with the team in Palo Alto, Calif. this week in hopes of making the final 23-man roster that will travel to Brazil for the tournament. The United States opens on June 16 against Ghana and will also play group stage games against Portugal and Germany.
Parkhurst has 25 caps for the United States and played in two World Cup qualifiers, including an appearance off the bench to help the Americans seal a 2-0 win over rival Mexico that clinched their spot in the World Cup.
A standout at Wake Forest from 2002-04, Parkhurst is trying to become the only the second Demon Deacon to make a World Cup roster. Wake Forest Hall of Famer Neil Covone was a member of the U.S. squad at the 1990 World Cup in Italy but did not appear in a game.
The final 23-man World Cup roster will be announced no later than June 2.
