BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Incoming freshman Claudia Day has been named the 2013-14 Gatorade Alabama Girls Soccer Player of the Year as announced by Gatorade and USA Today High School Sports earlier this week.
Competing for Briarwood Christian School, Day scored 40 goals and had 18 assists while leading the Lions to a 14-5-1 record and a spot in the Class 5A state quarterfinals. In 20 games, she recorded a stunning eight hat tricks, including a six-goal outing in a 7-2 victory over Benjamin Russell High School in the opening round of the state tournament.
Not only has Day proven to be a force on the field, however; she has also been a strong member of her school and local community as well. She is the secretary of Briarwood's senior class and volunteers in a fundraising campaign for cancer research and as a youth soccer coach.
Ryan Leib, her head coach at Briarwood, had nothing but praise for the young player. "Claudia is as complete a player as you will see in high school soccer. She is good with her feet, has great vision with her passes, can score goals, can set up goals and is great in the air."
The prestigious award recognizes not only outstanding athletic ability, but also honors high standards of academic achievement and strong character shown both on and off the field. With the accolades in hand, Day is also now a finalist for the Gatorade National Girls Soccer Player of the Year award to be handed out later this month.
Day will join the Demon Deacons in the fall as one of nine incoming freshmen on a squad dominated by underclassmen.
