Wake Forest rising freshman Will Zalatoris continued his dominating play this year as he carded a final round 3-under 68 to win the Texas State Amateur on Sunday.
Zalatoris' 68 capped a stellar week that saw him card rounds of 68-71-67-68 at the Brook Hollow Golf Club. He was the only player in the field to not card an over-par round. He finished at 10-under par, three-shots clear of Stratton Nolan who finished in second place.
For Zalatoris, this week was continued one of the best stretches of golf in his life. It started in March when he shot a 13-under 59 at the Lakes at Castle Hills in Lewisville. A month later, he won the Champions Invitational in California by a whopping 11 shots. The national tournament annually draws 230 of the top high school players in the country. In 2011, Zalatoris shared co-medalist honors there with PGA Tour winner Jordan Spieth. Zalatoris and another young PGA Tour winner, Rickie Fowler, are the only two to repeat as champions at the prestigious event.
Thomas Birdsey, who graduated this past May from Wake Forest, finished fifth in the event at even par. Birdsey won the Texas State Amateur in 2012.
