WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Jason Lowe has joined the Wake Forest women's soccer coaching staff as announced by Head Coach Tony da Luz on Tuesday morning.
Lowe joins the Demon Deacons after serving as an assistant coach at Alabama for the last five seasons, specializing in the development of the back line of the defense as well as the goalkeepers. He is a 1998 alumnus of Wake Forest and also served as a goalkeeper in the old gold and black for the men's soccer squad from 1994-97.
"I am very excited to be back at Wake Forest. I want to thank Coach da Luz, Mike Buddie and Ron Wellman for this amazing opportunity. Getting the call from Tony was a huge honor," Lowe said. "Alabama is a very special place to me but when home calls, you have to answer. The players and the staff have already given me a warm welcome back and I can't wait for preseason to begin."
During his time with the Crimson Tide, Lowe also acted as the recruiting coordinator and had a large amount of success. In the last two seasons, his recruits have gone on to earn three SEC All-Freshman Team honors and an NSCAA All-Region selection. In addition, the 2012 recruiting class was ranked 13th nationally and was the top class in the conference that year.
Under Lowe's tutelage, former Alabama goalkeeper Justine Bernier earned six school records and was the first player in school history to earn All-SEC honors in each of her four seasons. In 2010, Lowe's second season with the Crimson Tide, Bernier broke the school records for career saves and shutouts despite being only a junior and became Alabama's first All-SEC First Team selection since 1999.
"I am so happy to welcome Jason back to Wake Forest. Jason is a Demon Deacon through and through and has a true passion for Wake Forest athletics. He has great instincts for the game, and an incredible work ethic," da Luz said of his new assistant. "He made a strong impression on the Wake Forest community as a student-athlete and I'm sure he will thrive in his new coaching role in our program. We are incredibly fortunate to add person of his caliber to our department."
The Demon Deacons are going through their first goalkeeper transition since perennial All-ACC player Aubrey Bledsoe took over the position in 2010. Sara Small, Taylor Kerxton and Lindsay Preston will vie to take the starting spot between the posts for Wake Forest in 2014.
