WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Jon Bakero, a 6-3 midfielder from Sitges, Spain has signed with Wake Forest men's soccer and will join the team beginning with the 2014 season.
Bakero bolsters the talented incoming freshman class for Wake Forest. Born in Barcelona, Spain, Bakero attended the International School of Barcelona in Sitges.
"We're excited to have Jon join the program," said head coach Jay Vidovich. "He is a tremendous addition to Wake Forest and to our locker room. He has a lot of potential with great soccer DNA. Jon will fit right into our passing game and has great vision and good size that will allow him to play in the ACC. We can't wait to have him on the field with us."
Bakero played for the club team CF Blanca Sabur who were the league champions in 2013 and 2014. He also played alongside Antonio Sanabria at CF Blanca Sabur who recently joined AS Roma.
"I chose Wake Forest after meeting the coaches and seeing the style of play along with the culture at Wake Forest," said Bakero. "I dream about my first day on campus and getting started on a successful career."
Jon is the son of Jose Mari Bakero, who played in La Liga for 17 years, spending eight years with Real Sociedad, eight with FC Barcelona and one season with Veracruz. He scored 139 goals in 483 games and won 18 titles as a player. Along with a stellar club career, he also represented Spain at the Euro 1988, and the FIFA World Cup in 1990 and 1994.
The Demon Deacons will open the regular season on August 29 against UCLA at Spry Stadium. Wake Forest will host two exhibitions prior to that on August 18 versus Gardner-Webb and on August 23 against North Carolina.
