CLEMSON, S.C. - Tane Gent put Wake Forest up 1-0 early in the first half but Wake Forest fell 3-1 as Clemson scored three unanswered to defeat the Demon Deacons on Friday night.
Wake Forest (4-4-0, 1-2-0 ACC) led 1-0 but Clemson (5-4-0, 2-1-0 ACC) scored midway through the first half to even the game going into halftime. The Tigers then scored in the first 10 minutes of the second half and added a late goal en route to the win.
Hayden Partain and Michael Gamble assisted on Gent's goal, giving Gamble his 10th point of the week after he scored four goals and had an assist on Tuesday against VMI. The junior also had six shots and played all 90 minutes of the game.
Gent put Wake Forest up 1-0 in just the eighth minute as he scored after Partain found Gamble who slipped the pass to a wide open Gent just a few yards in front of the goal.
Goalkeeper Alec Ferrell made a great save on point-blank shot in the 26th minute but Thales Moreno of Clemson soon evened the game at 1-1 in the 27th minute as Clemson started a fast break and found Moreno on the cross.
Wake Forest had two more shots to close out the half as the two teams were tied at 1-1 heading into the locker rooms.
Kyle Fisher of Clemson put the Tigers up 2-1 in the 55th minute as Kyle Fisher headed a ball that just bounced off the post and slipped in for the go-ahead score.
Wake Forest had a couple chances with about 15 minutes remaining as Gent had a shot that just went wide of the post while Ian Harkes nearly netted one seconds later.
TJ Casner made it 3-1 Clemson with just 1:38 in the game to seal the 3-1 victory.
Notes
- Friday's game was the 40th all-time meeting between Wake Forest and Clemson.
- Gent scored his second goal of the season and has scored in two-straight games after recording a goal on Tuesday against VMI.
- Ferrell made three saves in the game.
- With Gamble's assist in the first half, he has now tallied a point in all but two games this season.
- Gent is now the fifth Deacon this season to have at least two goals.
- Wake Forest out shot Clemson 13-12 as the Deacs have out shot every opponent this season.
- Eight yellow cards were issued in the game with each team having four.
- Ian Harkes made his 29th-straight start for Wake Forest.
