LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Wake Forest led 10-7 heading into the fourth quarter, but Louisville reeled off 13 straight points to defeat the Demon Deacons 20-10 at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium on Saturday.
Tylor Harris led a strong defensive effort and set a new FBS record by recovering three fumbles in the game. No FBS player has totaled three fumble recoveries since it became an official stat in 1992, and Harris is now one away from Wake Forest's season record of five.
His biggest play came when he single-handedly earned a Wake Forest (2-3, 0-1 ACC) touchdown in the third quarter. With Louisville (4-1, 2-1 ACC) at its own 9-yard line, Harris rushed into the backfield to force a sack and fumble, also recovering the loose ball in the endzone to give Wake Forest a 10-7 lead at the 8:32 mark of the third quarter.
Louisville retook the lead when Brandon Radcliff capped off a 10-play, 69-yard drive with a 16-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter.
Cardinals kicker John Wallace added a pair of field goals from 31 and 34 yards to make it a two-possession game with 3:30 remaining.
Wake Forest turned it over on downs on its ensuing drive, and Louisville was then able to run out the clock.
The Demon Deacon defense had a strong afternoon, disrupting the Cardinals backfield all game, totaling eight tackles for loss and four sacks. Zachary Allen led the defense with 10 tackles - three for a loss - and a sack. Duke Ejiofor also earned his first career sack.
The Demon Deacon offense struggled against one of the top defenses in the nation. Wake Forest turned the ball over three times, punted nine times and finished with just 100 total yards, including -22 on the ground. Wake Forest was unable to put together a drive of more than seven plays or three-and-a-half minutes.
However, Louisville also pressured Wake Forest's offense throughout the contest. The Cardinals totaled eight sacks, three by Lorenzo Mauldin, and forced quarterback John Wolford into three interceptions.
With a career-long 43-yard field goal in the first quarter, Mike Weaver set a new school record with seven consecutive makes to start a career, surpassing the previous mark of 6-for-6 set in 1969. The Deacs led 3-0 until a Radcliff 29-yard run completed an 80-yard Cardinals scoring drive with 3:55 left in the second quarter.
Offensively, tight end Cam Serigne led the Deacs with five catches for 46 yards. For Louisville, Radcliff rushed 17 times for 129 yards and a pair of scores.
STRIKING FIRST
Wake Forest has scored first in all five games this season. Today, Mike Weaver started the scoring for the Deacs with a career-long field goal.
DEFENSIVE SCORES
The fumble recovery for a touchdown by Tylor Harris was already Wake Forest's third defensive touchdown of the 2014 season.
YOUNG GUNS
Saturday's quarterback match-up between Wake Forest's John Wolford and Louisville's Reggie Bonnafon was the first FBS game this season in which a pair of true freshman quarterbacks started.
NOT THE "TARGET" YOU WANT
Senior cornerback Kevin Johnson was ejected in the first quarter after a targeting penalty in which he hit a Louisville player's helmet with his shoulder pads.
Johnson was the first Wake Forest player to be flagged and ejected for targeting since it was instituted as both a penalty and automatic ejection before the 2013 season.
Sophomore corner Brad Watson stepped into the lineup and totaled three tackles and a pair of pass breakups.
Because the infraction occurred in the first half, Johnson does not have to sit out the first half of the next game.
ON DECK
Wake Forest travels to Tallahassee, Fla. to take on the defending national champion and No. 1-ranked Florida State Seminoles next Saturday at 3:30 p.m. on ABC.
