
Wake Forest Stifles Cleveland State in 4-1 Win

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Michael Gamble and Jacori Hayes each had a goal and an assist on Sunday as Wake Forest defeated Cleveland State 4-1 at Spry Stadium.
Hank Gauger and Ricky Greensfelder also had goals for Wake Forest (2-2-0) while the Demon Deacon defense limited Cleveland State (2-2-0) to just four total shots.
After leading 1-0 at halftime, Wake Forest scored three second half goals. After leading 2-0, Cleveland State narrowed the lead with a goal in the 66th minute but the Deacs score two goals in the final 10 minutes en route to the victory.
Wake Forest peppered Cleveland State through the first half with several shots but finally broke through in the latter half of the first half.
Gamble recorded his first goal of the season as he converted a penalty kick in the 33rd minute after Jacori Hayes was fouled in the box. He leads Wake Forest in points this season with six after a two-assist night on Friday against UConn.
Wake Forest tallied 11 shots in the first half while holding the Vikings to none. The Deacs also held a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Wake Forest made it a 2-0 game in the second half as Gauger scored after a lead pass from Gamble and Harkes. Cleveland State got one goal back in the 66th minute as Sergio Manesio converted the first shot of the night for the Vikings.
Greensfelder capitalized in the 82nd minute after he collected a rebound and scored after Hayes had his shot blocked by the defender. Hayes then scored his first goal of the season after he beat the defender and shot past the keeper in a one-on-one play.
Alec Ferrell made two saves in the game as the Deacs stymied the Vikings attack for much of the contest.
Notes
- Wake Forest remains perfect against Cleveland State after defeating the Vikings in 2011.
- The Demon Deacons are 3-0-0 all-time against Horizon League teams.
- Gamble recorded a goal and one assist to add on to his two assists on Friday giving him five points for the weekend.
- With one goal apiece on Sunday, Greensfelder and Gauger lead Wake Forest in goals with two each.
- After dropping the first two games of the season, Wake Forest has now won two straight heading into Friday's ACC-opener with NC State.
- Ian Harkes has now started 25-straight games for Wake Forest dating back to last season as he has started every game as a Demon Deacon. Harkes recorded an assist against Cleveland State.
- Cleveland State was given two yellow cards on Sunday night.
- Wake Forest recorded 24 total shots compared to four for the Vikings.
