WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest and the University of North Carolina have scheduled a two-game home-and-home football non-conference series for 2019 and 2021.
The series marks the first time two members of a Power Five conference have agreed to play each other in a football contest scheduled originally as a non-conference game.
The series will begin on Sept. 14, 2019 at BB&T Field in Winston-Salem. The Deacons will visit the Tar Heels on Sept. 25, 2021 at Kenan Stadium in Chapel Hill.
Wake Forest is scheduled to play a conference game at North Carolina in 2015 and will host the Tar Heels in 2022 in ACC play.
"Because of the ACC schedule, we do not have the opportunity to play North Carolina as regularly as we have in the past," said Wake Forest Athletics Director Ron Wellman. "These are two teams that played the very first college football game in this state over 125 years ago. We felt it made perfect sense to continue this rivalry and allow fans of both schools to enjoy playing a traditional opponent."
North Carolina holds a 68-35-2 lead in the all-time series that originated in 1888. Wake Forest has won three of the last four meetings, claiming victories at BB&T Field in 2007 and 2012 while winning at Chapel Hill in 2006.
The Demon Deacon-Tar Heel series ranks as the third-longest rivalry in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The two schools have met 105 times since the series started in 1888.
Since the conclusion of World War II, over 2.1 million fans have witnessed the Wake Forest-UNC football contests.
