GREENSBORO, N.C. – For the second time this season, Wake Forest men's soccer goalkeeper Alec Ferrell has been named the ACC's Defensive Player of the Week. This time, Ferrell shares the honor with NC State keeper Alex McCauley.
Ferrell had a stellar week in helping Wake Forest go 1-0-1 against No. 15 South Carolina and No. 22 NC State. In both contests, Ferrell made seven saves to match his career high. It marks the third and fourth times this year he's posted seven saves in a contest. In ACC action on Friday, Oct. 9, on the road against the Wolfpack, Ferrell made a key save on Ade Taiwo, who had a clean look at goal in the penalty area, in double overtime to preserve the result for the Demon Deacons. The redshirt-junior goalkeeper has now posted five shutouts this season in just nine games. The figure marks a career-high, breaking his previous best of four shutouts last season in 19 contests.
The goalkeeper first earned ACC Defensive Player of the Week honors on Sept. 29. That week, he and Jon Bakero helped the Deacs sweep the ACC weekly awards.
Wake Forest's next contest comes Saturday night, Oct. 17, at Spry Stadium against No. 2 North Carolina. In this week's rankings, the Demon Deacons rank No. 4 in the Top Drawer Soccer poll, No. 5 in the NSCAA rankings and No. 6 in the Soccer America release. North Carolina ranks No. 2 in all three polls behind No. 1 Creighton. Saturday's match marks the first of a four-game homestand with the culmination of the homestand marking the final regular season tilt at Spry Stadium on Tuesday, Oct. 27, against Davidson.
