ALPHARETTA, Ga. – The fifth-ranked Wake Forest men's golf team climbed to first place during the second round of the U.S. Collegiate Championship at the Golf Club of Georgia. The Demon Deacons, who opened the day in third place, shot a 3-under round of 285 to take over the lead at the event, which features seven of the top nine teams in the current Golfstat rankings.
Wake Forest is at 7-under for the tournament and will enter the final round one shot ahead of top-ranked Auburn and three shots ahead of No. 4 Florida State. Only four of the 17 teams at the event are under par after 36 holes.
"We played good, solid golf today," said head coach Jerry Haas. "It was very chilly this morning, but we had a wonderful start. It was nice to finish early and be relaxing at 7-under while everyone else was still on the course. We are looking forward to some more solid golf tomorrow."
Freshman Cameron Young continues to lead the Demon Deacons at the event, shooting a second-round 69. He is in second place individually at 7-under through 36 holes, one shot off the lead. Sophomore Paul McBride is also in the top 10 individually, T-8th, at 3-under after a second round 71. Sophomore Will Zalatoris is at 1-under for the tournament after posting a 73 on Saturday. Senior Davis Womble shot even-par 72 during the second round and is at 4-over for the event.
The tournament concludes Sunday in suburban Atlanta. The Demon Deacons are looking for their third victory of the season.
