GREENSBORO, N.C. – For the fifth-straight week, a Wake Forest men's soccer player has been honored with a weekly award from the ACC. On Tuesday, the conference announced Jon Bakero as the ACC's Co-Offensive Player of the Week.
The award marks the second time in 2015 Bakero has earned the honor. As a team, Wake Forest has six ACC Player of the Week honors with three on both offense and defense. The figure more than doubles the next two teams in the conference, as both North Carolina and Duke have had three weekly honors this year.
Bakero scored in each of Wake Forest's two games last week, tallying in the midweek contest against Georgia State before notching the game-winning goal in the 87th minute to help the Deacs top No. 4 Notre Dame. Scoring his fifth-career game winner and his first of 2015, Bakero deflected a pass from Ricky Greensfelder into the top-left corner of goal past the outstretched keeper to lift the Deacs, keeping them as the only unbeaten team in ACC play this year with just one conference game to go.
The sophomore from Sitges, Spain, also won ACC Offensive Player of the Week honors on Sept. 29 after scoring against No. 6 Akron and No. 5 Clemson while helping the Deacs to a 1-0-1 week against the top top-five opponents.
North Carolina's Andy Lopez was the other Offensive Player of the Week while Duke's Markus Fjørtoft took home Defensive Player of the Week honors.
Wake Forest returns to action Tuesday night for the regular season home finale against Davidson. First kick is set for 7 p.m. at Spry Stadium.
