WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Wake Forest freshman Cameron Young was named ACC Golfer of the Month for October, conference officials announced Wednesday. Young won a pair of individual titles and led the Demon Deacons to two team championships over the past month.
Young shared medalist honors at the U.S. Collegiate Championship in Alpharetta, Ga., to claim his first collegiate title, helping the Demon Deacons win the event, featuring nine of the top 11 teams in the nation. He won again at his next tournament, taking top individual honors last week at the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational on the Hawaiian island of Kauai. He also posted a top-20 finish at the Nike Golf Collegiate Championship in Portland, Ore., helping Wake Forest win that event.
Young becomes the first Demon Deacon to win twice during the fall season since Bill Haas in 2003-04. He is the first Wake Forest player to win consecutive tournaments since Haas in 2002-03 and the first Deacon freshman to accomplish the feat since Curtis Strange in 1973-74. Young is the first Deacon to have two victories as a freshman since Gary Hallberg in 1976-77.
Young is currently ranked No. 23 in the Golfstat individual rankings and is the nation's highest-ranked freshman.
The Demon Deacons, who ended the fall season ranked second nationally, will return to action in February as they begin the spring season at the Mobile Sports Authority Invitational in Alabama.
