Three Deacons Named to 2014 All-ACC Academic Team

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Georgia Holland, Sarah Thornhill and Valerie Dahmen of the 2014 ACC Champion Wake Forest Demon Deacons were named to the 2014 All-ACC Academic Field Hockey Team as announced by the Atlantic Coast Conference office on Wednesday afternoon. All three players earn their first-career All-ACC Academic honor.

In her only season as a Demon Deacon after transferring from Yale, this award adds to Holland's already decorated season with the 2014 ACC Champions. She tabbed her first-career NFHCA All-American honor and also earned NFHCA All-South Region First Team honors and a second-career All-Region Team selection.

As a graduate student from Stony Brook, N.Y., Holland was named the ACC Defensive Player of the Year for her outstanding play on the back line. She racked up three goals and an assist this season, including a goal in the ACC Championship game. Holland was named to the ACC All-Tournament Team for her efforts during Wake Forest's tournament run. She also earned a spot on the All-ACC Second Team.

Thornhill earns her first All-ACC Academic Team selection after starting in 12 of 21 games that she played in her sophomore season. She finished the season with three goals on 12 shots for six total points, including her first-career goal and game-winner in a 3-2 overtime victory over No. 17 Michigan on Aug. 31.

Dahmen was the starter in the cage for every match with the Demon Deacons during their ACC Championship run. She finished the season playing over 1479 total minutes, while averaging 1.61 goals allowed per game and posted a 14-7 overall record. Dahmen made 66 saves for the season and was a part of six team shutouts.

All seven ACC schools that compete in field hockey are represented on the All-ACC Academic Teamwith Duke redshirt junior goalkeeper Lauren Blazing earning Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors.

To be eligible for consideration for the All-ACC Academic team, a student-athlete, regardless of classification, must have earned a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.0 cumulative average during her academic career.
