LOS CABOS, Mexico - Sophomore Danny Guise opened the spring season and the Querencia Cabo Collegiate with a 2-under 69 to lead Wake Forest on Sunday.

As a team, the Demon Deacons posted a 1-over 285 and are tied for fifth with Houston.

"We are really excited to get the spring started at such a tremendous event," said associate head coach Dan Walters. "We played a solid round but got sloppy in spots throughout the day. Fifth place is a nice spot to be with 36 holes to go and I am excited to see us improve over the next two days."

Guise birdied five holes in the opening round to finish tied for seventh in the individual standings. Freshman Will Zalatoris finished one stroke back of Guise with a 1-under 70 which put him in a tie for 13th heading in to Monday's second round.

Freshman Paul McBride birdied his final hole of the day to card a 1-over 72 and tie for 23rd. Sophomore Woody Woodward shot right at his season average with a 3-over 74 and is tied for 47th on Sunday. Senior Cyrus Stewart rounded out the opening round scores with a 76.

Florida State leads the tournament with a 9-under 275. The Seminoles have a one-stroke lead over South Florida. USF's Rigel Fernandes carded the low score of the day with a 7-under 64 to lead the individual standings.

Wake Forest will be paired with Houston, Lamar and Vanderbilt for Monday's second round.
