Hi! I'm Claudia Day. Monday morning we woke up excited to start our first full day in the beautiful city of Antigua. We started our morning by cooking breakfast for each other in our condos; after we finished, we went to a coffee farm.
We were greeted by local Mayan farmers who work for "De La Gente" coffee. They took us on a long hike to the coffee field, in which they taught us about the coffee plant. We also each got to pick a basket full of ripe beans. Next, the farmer took us back to his house, where we shelled our freshly picked coffee beans. His wife then roasted coffee beans on their stove, and she ground the them by hand. They brewed a pot of the fresh coffee for us to taste and gave each one of us a pound of "De La Gente" coffee.
The next stop on our trip was to a local elementary school. We set up different games to play with the kids including: water balloons, hopscotch, hula-hoops, bubbles and soccer. Some of us also got to meet our "Ajihadas" which we had chosen to sponsor last spring. Our Ajihadas were adorable, and we really bonded with the girls. Jenna's little girl even had the same name as her. We got to meet their moms before we left. They were so sweet, and thanked us for our time.
Later that night, we had a pizza party. Managers from "De La Gente" and "Niños de Guatemala" both came to tell their stories. They explained to us about non-profit organizations, and how they seek to better the community and world through their work. It was a great first day!
