WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest Football completed its sixth practice of the spring on a chilly Tuesday morning at the Doc Martin Football Practice Complex.
With the first scrimmage of the spring season coming up on Saturday at BB&T Field, head coach Dave Clawson is pleased with the progress of the team heading into the first opportunity to have an organized game situation.
"We are continuing to practice physically, and we are really working hard to try to run the football better," head coach Dave Clawson said. "So you see us devoting a lot of drills to running the football, the play-action and trying to establish physicality on how we play on both sides of the line of scrimmage."
Wake Forest continues to work on the progression of the offense and coach Clawson is seeing a lot of improvement from his young offense.
"We are clearly getting better on the offensive line," said Clawson. "We've got six guys in the two-deep that weren't even here a year ago and everyday those guys come out here and get better. At quarterback, John Wolford clearly has a greater command of the system than he did in the fall. The tight ends, running backs and the rest of the guys are back and are continuing to get better," Clawson added.
Today marked second day in which defensive players were able to tackle and the offensive and defensive lines were permitted to use full contact in live drills. Clawson and the rest of the coaching staff have been able to evaluate more closely on the progression of players on the defensive side of the ball.
"On the defensive line, again, we are young, but they continue to get better", Clawson explained. The best position on the team is at linebacker. That's the one position where everyone is back. In the secondary we have a lot of work to do. We graduated three of the four starters, so it is a work in progress."
Although the scrimmage this weekend is the first time the team will go through an organized game situation, what Clawson is looking forward to most is the opportunity to see his guys play after all of their hard work thus far. "We just want to see guys play," said Clawson. "We are going to keep it simple and let them execute the base schemes and let them play in an environment where we cut them loose."
The Deacons will continue to practice Tuesday and Thursday at 7:55 a.m. for each of the next two weeks. Wake Forest will play its first scrimmage of the spring season on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at BB&T Field.
