ATLANTA, Ga. - Wake Forest senior Dearica Hamby has been named one of 12 finalists for the Wade Trophy as announced today by Wade Trophy Committee, along with the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and SHAPE America - the Society of Health and Physical Educators.
The Wade Trophy is presented annually to the nation's most outstanding Division I women's basketball player. The candidates were selected by a vote of committee members consisting of leading basketball coaches, journalists and administrators. The committee will select the winner of The Wade Trophy from among these 12 finalists. The winner will be announced during the WBCA Awards Show, which will be held at 5:30 p.m. ET Monday, April 6, in the Grand Ballroom at the Tampa Marriott Waterside. The event is part of the WBCA National Convention and is held in conjunction with the NCAA Women's Final Four.
Hamby is a finalist for the Wade Trophy for the first time but she has been on the watch list all season. Last year she was a midseason addition to the watch list but was not a finalist. The awards have piled up for the forward. For the second-straight season she has been named WBCA All-Region and first team All-ACC by both the head coach and the Blue Ribbon Panel. Hamby was also a first team All-ACC Tournament selection.
Hamby finished her career as the program's all-time leading scorer (1,801 points) and rebounder (1,021 rebounds). She is just the second Demon Deacon to reach 1,000 career points and rebounds along with Hoover. In her senior season she averaged 20.3 points and 10.7 rebounds per game. Additionally, she finished in the top five all-time in double-doubles, free throws made, field goals made, rebounding average, blocks, games started, games played and minutes played.
