MUNICH, Germany - Former Wake Forest standout Katie Stengel and her Bayern Munich team claimed the Frauen-Bundesliga title on Sunday, defeating SGS Essen to cap off an undefeated season.
Bayern Munich finished the season 17-0-5, edging out Wolfsburg (17-1-4), who played FFC Frankfurt to a 1-1 draw Sunday, for the championship of the top German league.
By claiming their first league title since 1976, Bayern Munich also qualifies for the UEFA Women's Champions League round of 32 stage for the first time since 2009-10.
Stengel, a rookie, led Bayern Munich with nine goals, also the most by an American in the Bundesliga.
At Wake Forest, Stengel became the program's all-time leading scorer with 50 goals, also adding 25 assists in 75 games as she became a three-time All-American.
She is one of three former Demon Deacons currently in the professional ranks, joined by Aubrey Bledsoe of Sky Blue FC and Kelsey Zalimeni of Crystal Palace Ladies FC.
