WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Wake Forest men's soccer team will host Kentucky on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m., marking the team's second exhibition of the 2015 preseason prior to the start of the regular season next Friday against Santa Clara.
pSaturday night's game against the Wildcats will mark the first competitive contest at Spry Stadium since it received a makeover in the offseason, which included redoing the playing surface and adding in new amenities around the stadium.
In their first exhibition last Sunday, Aug. 16, the Demon Deacons battled Furman to a 1-1 draw at Stone Stadium in Greenville, South Carolina. Wake Forest's lone goal came in the 16th minute off the foot of Michael Gamble. The senior put home a rebound attempt after Jacori Hayes took an initial shot on goal.
Kentucky will be playing its third exhibition of 2015. The Wildcats lost a 1-0 decision in Aug. 16 against Northern Kentucky. In the second exhibition, Kentucky earned a 4-0 decision at home against Lipscomb.
The Wildcats are coming off a 10-6-4 season in which it went to the NCAA Championship. The Wildcats bowed out of the tournament in a 2-0 loss to Oakland in the opening round. Napo Matsoso is the team's leading returning scorer. He scored five goals as a sophomore in 2014, which was good enough for second on the team. In this year's preseason NSCAA Coaches Poll, Kentucky earned four votes. Wake Forest picked up 13 votes in the poll.
After the exhibition, Wake Forest will open a four-game homestand on Friday, Aug. 28, against Santa Clara to start the regular season. First kick between the Deacs and Broncos is set for 7 p.m.
