WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- After opening the season with a pair of victories over Santa Clara and Florida International, the Wake Forest men's soccer team cracked the national rankings this week.
The Demon Deacons check in at No. 20 in the country in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll and the Soccer America poll, and are ranked No. 25 in the TopDrawerSoccer.com poll. The Deacs are one of six teams from the ACC to find themselves in the top 25 polls.
In the preseason release of the three polls, the Deacs received 13 points toward the NSCAA poll but were left out of the top 25. This week, the Demon Deacons earned 173 points in the poll. Wake Forest was also the first team left off the top 25 in the Soccer America and TopDrawerSoccer.com preseason polls prior to cracking the rankings this week.
In the year's first release of the NSCAA regional rankings, the Deacs also check in at No. 6 in the South region. Only Virginia, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Coastal Carolina and Clemson check in ahead of Wake Forest in the region.
Next up for the Demon Deacons, Florida Gulf Coast will make a trip to Spry Stadium on Saturday night, Sept. 5, for a 7 p.m. contest. FGCU was ranked No. 19 in the NSCAA poll and battled then-No. 3 Georgetown to a scoreless draw last week, but fell out of the top 25 and is now only receiving points. The Eagles are still No. 19 in this week's TopDrawerSoccer.com poll. FGCU will take on UCF on Wednesday night prior to coming to Winston-Salem.
