DURHAM, N.C. -- The Wake Forest men's golf team began its 2015-16 season Saturday with the first day of the Rod Myers Invitational at the Duke University Golf Club. Sophomore Will Zalatoris leads the tournament at 12-under through 36 holes as the Demon Deacons sit in first place at 9-under with one round remaining.
The Demon Deacons lead host Duke (8-under) by one shot, while Penn State is in third at 1-under.
"I was very happy with the amount of birdies we made today," said head coach Jerry Haas. "It was a great team effort as everyone counted at least one round. We will need a solid day tomorrow as Duke will be tough on their home course."
Zalatoris tied his low-round from his freshman season with a first-round 66, then matched it again in the afternoon with another round of 66. His score of 12-under gives him the individual lead by four strokes over Duke's Adam Wood.
Davis Womble is T-12th at even-par, shooting 1-over in the morning and 1-under in the afternoon. Ben Balter and Cameron Young are T-20th at 2-over for the tournament. Balter shot 2-over during round one and even-par during round two. Young, making his collegiate debut, shot 4-over to open the day before posting a 2-under round of 70 during the afternoon. Paul McBride is T-33rd after rounds of 75 and 73 during the opening day.
The Demon Deacons were third after the first round, shooting even-par 288. In the afternoon they posted a 9-under score of 279 to claim the lead.
The final round of the Rod Myers Invitational is Sunday morning at the Duke University Golf Club.
