GREENSBORO, N.C. – Wake Forest men's soccer swept the ACC Player of the Week honors on Tuesday, as Jon Bakero earned Offensive Player of the Week while Alec Ferrell was named Defensive Player of the Week.
Bakero scored two of the Demon Deacons three goals last week in helping Wake Forest go 1-0-1 against No. 6 Akron and No. 5 Clemson. In Tuesday's contest against the Zips, Bakero scored the first goal of the game in the 21st minute to get the Deacs off and running. Against Clemson on Saturday, the sophomore scored his third goal in as many games by cashing in in the 63rd minute to tie the game at 1-1. The goal would ultimately be the one that kept Wake Forest atop the ACC Atlantic Division standings after the final whistle. Bakero has now scored four goals this season and is two off his career high of six, set last year as a freshman.
Ferrell got the start between the pipes in both games last week and made numerous spectacular saves to help the Deacs to the 1-0-1 week. Against Akron with Wake Forest leading 2-1, Ferrell made a fantastic stop in the 80th minute on a header from five yards out off a corner kick to preserve the victory. Against the Tigers, Ferrell had a 10-minute stretch late in the game in which he made three excellent, sprawling saves in a steady rainfall to keep the Deacs tied with Clemson at 1-1.
Making seven saves in each of the two games last week, Ferrell tied his career high on both occasions. He had previously stopped seven shots twice in his career before doing it two times last week.
Wake Forest continues ACC action Friday, Oct. 2, at 7 p.m. on the road against Boston College. The Deacs and Eagles are atop the ACC Atlantic Division standings with seven and six points, respectively. Wake Forest stands at 2-0-1 in ACC play while Boston College sits with a record of 2-1.
