Deacs Host Tar Heels Looking for First ACC Win
In search of their first ACC win, the Demon Deacons will welcome in-state rival North Carolina to LJVM Coliseum on Thursday at 7 p.m.
The matchup between Wake Forest and North Carolina is scheduled for 7 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN3.
Last Time Out
Wake Forest put together comeback attempts in both the third and fourth quarters, but Syracuse ultimately held off the Demon Deacons and took a 91-65 decision on Sunday, Jan. 17, at LJVM Coliseum.
Trailing by 19 at halftime, Wake Forest cut the lead to 13 midway through the third quarter, but Syracuse recovered to take a 17-point advantage to the final quarter.
In the final 10 minutes, Wake Forest again cut the lead down, this time to 12 at 71-59 with 4:18 to play. Syracuse then got hot and finished the game on a 20-6 run to seal the win.
Amber Campbell scored a career-high 25 points, which included 16 of Wake Forest's fast-break points in the contest. Both Milan Quinn and Elisa Penna scored in double figures, as Quinn notched 12 and Penna recorded 10 to help Wake Forest.
Scouting the Tar Heels
North Carolina enters the contest on a three-game losing skid after winning six in a row from Dec. 16 to Jan. 7.
The Tar Heels started ACC play 2-0 with wins over Clemson and Syracuse, but have since fallen to Notre Dame, Georgia Tech and Miami.
UNC is led by three players averaging more than 13 points per game. Jamie Cherry leads the way averaging 14.5 points, followed by Destinee Walker (14.1 ppg) and Stephanie Watts (13.1 ppg). Hillary Summers' 10.1 points per game average give North Carolina four players averaging more than 10 points per contest.
Series History
North Carolina leads the all-time series 63-12 over Wake Forest and has won each of the last 13 matchups dating back to 2004.
Wake Forest's last win over North Carolina came at home on Jan. 26, 2004, when the Deacs topped UNC 69-67. The win was the final one in a stretch that saw Wake Forest take at least one win over North Carolina in three of five seasons from 1999-2000 to 2003-2004.
Bringing the Best
Wake Forest's first six ACC opponents have a combined 82-32 record overall this season and a 20-12 ACC mark.
Of Wake Forest's first six ACC opponents, Miami and and Syracuse each only have one loss in conference play while NC State and Virginia each have two. Both North Carolina and Duke sit at 2-3 in ACC aciton.
Next Time Out
Wake Forest will travel north to Chestnut Hill, Mass., for a Sunday afternoon matchup against Boston College on Jan. 24.
Opening tip for the Deacs and Eagles is set for 1 p.m.
The Demon Deacons lead the all-time series between Wake Forest and Boston College 8-5 and have won eight of the last nine matchups.
