CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Wake Forest women's golf team began play Sunday at the Cougar Classic, shooting a first-round 6-under 282 at the Yeamans Hall Club. The Demon Deacons are in third place after one round, four shots off the lead.
Senior Sierra Sims, who has finished in the top five at the Cougar Classic in each of the past two years, has the individual lead after 18 holes, shooting a 6-under 66. Antonia Eberhard is T-3rd at 4-under, shooting a career-best 68.
Jennifer Kupcho is the third Deacon under par, posting a 1-under round of 71 and is T-21st. Sierra Brooks shot a 5-over round of 77, while fellow freshman Mathilda Cappeliez had her first round score disqualified after signing for an incorrect score.
"The team played very well today," said head coach Dianne Dailey. "Sierra Sims got off to a wonderful start at 6-under and showed how much she loves this course. Toni played her best collegiate round at 4-under and Jennifer played steady at 1-under. Sierra Brooks showed tremendous grit in her round as she was struggling with her swing. It was unfortunate for Mathilda to sign an incorrect scorecard, but she's a fighter and will be back tomorrow. Everyone on this team can be under par and that is exciting."
Furman holds the first round lead at 10-under, followed by North Carolina at 7-under and the Deacs at 6-under. Eight of the 21 teams in the field shot under par on Sunday.
The tournament continues Monday and concludes Tuesday in Charleston.
