ALPHARETTA, Ga. – The Wake Forest men's golf team finished ninth at the elite Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate, a tournament that featured 12 top-30 squads. The Demon Deacons shot a 3-under round of 285 during Sunday's play to finish the tournament at 1-under.
The ninth-ranked Demon Deacons couldn't overcome a disappointing 11-over first round on Friday. They shot 9-under on Saturday and 3-under on Sunday to finish the event under par, but the deficit was too much to overcome against the elite field.
"We battled hard all day long, but the par-5s just killed us today," said head coach Jerry Haas. "A few guys really battled hard as Cameron (Young) double-bogeyed the first and finished 1-under and Will (Zalatoris) was four-over through eight and fought back to par. We will be a good team all year long and are looking forward to seeing a lot of these teams again in the spring."
Cameron Young was the low Deac for the tournament. He shot a 1-under 71 during the final round to finish the tournament T-12th at 3-under. Will Zalatoris rallied late in the round to finish Sunday with an even par 72, ending the tournament at 1-over.
The round of the day for the Deacs came from Lee Detmer. After shooting 17-over during the first two rounds, he posted a 4-under 68 during Sunday's play. Eric Bae finished the tournament at 2-over after a 1-over final round 73. Paul McBride rounded out the lineup with a 5-over 77 on Sunday to finish the tournament at 7-over.
The Demon Deacons conclude the fall schedule next weekend with the Cypress Point Classic in Pebble Beach, Calif.
