WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Wake Forest redshirt-senior goalkeeper Alec Ferrell has been named ACC men's soccer Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.
In two Demon Deacon victories last week over No. 21 South Carolina and No. 18 Boston College, Ferrell notched his sixth and seventh shutouts of the season in just 11 games this year. He has helped Wake Forest to a 0.43 goals against average, which ranks second nationally.
At South Carolina, Ferrell made three stops, including a diving stop on a ball bending low and away to keep the game scoreless in the first half. Ferrell made seven saves to tie his career high in Saturday's win over the Eagles, including a stop in the 79th minute when he laid out to save a heavy shot by Callum Johnson. He also stopped a point-blank shot by Zeiko Lewis in the 55th minute to preserve the 1-0 lead.
In all, Ferrell has now amassed 21 shutouts in his career as a Demon Deacon while posting a 36-13-9 record in 58 games. His career GAA sits at 0.90 while his save percentage this season stands at a career-best .881.
For his efforts in the Deacs' two victories last week, Ferrell was also named Top Drawer Soccer's National Player of the Week.
Wake Forest is set to close out the regular season on Friday, Oct. 28, when it travels to No. 6 Syracuse. A win Friday in New York would clinch the ACC Atlantic title for the second season in a row. First kick is set for 7 p.m. on ACC Network Extra.
